How to finish a PhD in one day?

There are days that one can read an article and feels like: Why am I doing this PhD thesis? What is the interest of this work to the world anyway? Today is that day! After reading this publication from 2009 , I just feel to give up. Someone else have already made it. Health recommendations advocating increased fish consumption need to be placed in the context of the potential collapse of global marine capture fisheries. In economically developed countries, official healthy eating advice is to eat more fish, particularly that rich in omega-3 oils. In many less economically developed countries, fish is a key human health asset, contributing >20% of animal protein intake. Marine ecologists predict on current trends that fish stocks are set to collapse in 40 years, and propose increased restrictions on fishing, including no-take zones, in order to restore marine ecosystem health. Production of fishmeal for aquaculture and other non-food uses (22 MT in 2003) appears to be unsustainable.

Autumn colors

Colors of Swedish food in the street. Green, orange, purple, brown, and beautiful flowers. Can we eat them as well? Everything it´s changing again. More cold, less light, some rain...but a lot of new colors are coming from the ground. I can't know how but I feel the landscape has a new color palette every day. Green, brown, and green, brown and yellow! The leaves fall from the sky and they light your way.

Cycling Trivialities

Image
Too blind to know your best. Hurrying through the forks without regrets. Different now, every step feels like a mile. All the lights seem to flash and pass you by. So how's it gonna be. When it all comes down you're cycling trivialities. Don't know which way to turn. Every trifle becoming big concerns. All this time you were chasing dreams, without knowing what you wanted them to mean. So how's it gonna be. When it all comes down you're cycling trivialities. So how's it gonna be. When it all comes down you're cycling trivialities. Who cares in a hundred years from now. All the small steps, all your shitty clouds. Who cares in a hundred years from now. Who'll remember all the players. Who'll remember all the clowns. So how's it gonna be. When it all comes down you're cycling trivialities. So what does this really mean. When it all comes down you're cycling trivialities.

Solutions for a planet

Increasing population and consumption are placing unprecedented demands on agriculture and natural resources. Today, approximately a billion people are chronically malnourished while our agricultural systems are concurrently degrading land, water, biodiversity and climate on a global scale. To meet the world’s future food security and sustainability needs, food production must grow substantially while, at the same time, agriculture’s environmental footprint must shrink dramatically. Here we analyse solutions to this dilemma, showing that tremendous progress could be made by halting agricultural expansion, closing ‘yield gaps’ on underperforming lands, increasing cropping efficiency, shifting diets and reducing waste . Together, these strategies could double food production while greatly reducing the environmental impacts of agriculture. ... A large volume of food is never consumed but is instead discarded, degraded or consumed by pests along the supply chain...about one-third of food i

An interesting campaign launched by a supermarket in UK: The Un/usual suspects . Customers asking for one of the 'Big 5' species - cod, haddock, tuna, salmon or prawns - from its fish counters will be offered an alternative, lesser known species for free (alternative species in store such as coley, pouting and megrim). With 80% of fish sales currently made up of the 'Big 5', they believe this is the boldest move yet by any UK retailer to encourage customers to widen their repertoire in fish and make more sustainable choices. Taking Channel 4's Great British Fish Fight a step further, this unprecedented move allows customers to try varieties such as pouting, megrim, coley, and mackerel, in a risk-free way helping to alleviate pressure on declining fish stocks and reduce waste from fishing. Pode ser uma forma de evitar o desperdício de peixe fresco à venda no supermercado. E com o tempo pode ser que altere alguns hábitos dos consumidores. É de certeza uma forma de

A global perspective on EU fisheries reform

We are not producing fish, we are not like farmers. We are just gathering them. Nature has made them for us. So if you cannot make money gathering fish, that means the fish should be left alone. They should have a chance to rebuild themselves. Subsidies are actually decreasing the catches. What it means in Europe is that subsidies must go. Because we are going to face enormous competition outside Europe for the fish resource. And the first thing we must do is rebuild our own resource because they could produce much more if they were rebuilt. In the reform policy, there is no explicit rebuilding plan. It does not specify how fast you should rebuild what stock. In the USA, they specify how fast all stock stocks should be rebuilt. There, the fisheries quota should be adjusted so that the stock can be rebuilt in ten years. That’s what the EU does not have in its plans. The quote comes from this lecture by Dr Daniel Pauly in the European Parliament, 13 September 2011 – “A Global Perspective

You get back, what you send towards

A very big truth in life but also in our conscious: you get back, what you send towards. Like a boomerang, in the end it always comes to meet you. “First, let’s fix the economic crisis, then we’ll do something about the environment”. Thank you C., I love you too.
