The EU market and its consumers are highly complex

According to Paquotte,of the European Commission Markets and Trade section, at EUR 55 billion, the EU is the world’s most valuable seafood market. It represents 12 percent of worldwide seafood consumption but only 5 percent of seafood production , making it by far the No. 1 importer at 9 million metric tons annually, which is twice as much as the United States or Japan. Paquotte explained that a common mistake was often made in assuming that the EU market was homogeneous, when the reality is that it’s disparate. “Firstly, the five largest markets — Spain, France, Italy, the UK and Germany — account for two-thirds of all EU seafood consumed. Secondly, the annual per-capita consumption ranges from 4.5 kilograms in Bulgaria to 65 kilograms in Portugal , with an average of 27 kilograms,” he said. “Consumers eat mostly carp in Hungary, sea bass in Italy, sea bream in Spain, salmon in Germany and the UK, pangasius in Poland and a combination of all these species in France.” Paquotte noted t

A scientific panel convened in March by the international commission that regulates the Atlantic bluefin catch suggested that this year’s quota not exceed last year’s limit of 13,500 tons . Such a catch would give bluefin stocks a 60 percent chance of recovering by 2019 , the panel said. But many national fisheries continue to ignore their obligation to provide accurate data on how many bluefin they land each year, making accurate quotas virtually impossible to produce, outside observers assert. Global catch losses from overfishing account for between 7 and 36 percent of the actual fish tonnage landed annually, the economists determined. The value lost from overfishing ranges from USD 6.4 billion to USD 36 billion annually. Global subsidies totaled USD 27 million in 2003, 60 percent of which was allocated to “capacity-enhancing” subsidies such as boat construction and fuel. The capacity-enhancing subsidies “encourage fisheries to bring in larger catches, contributing to unsustainable fishing practices over the long term,” according to the researchers. Japan spent the most — USD 4.6 billion — on fishing subsidies in 2003, while China spent USD 4.1 billion. The European Union provided USD 2.7 billion on subsidies, the United States allocated USD 1.8 billion and Russia dished out USD 1.5 billion. A principal conclusão é que os consumidores parecem ficar mais confusos com a eco-certificação. A informação começa a ser tanta e tão distinta que não conseguem adoptar uma escolha facilmente. Por exemplo, para o caso da MSC, o maior órgão de certificação dos produtos da pesca, apenas 6% dos entrevistados têm conhecimento do que significa. Sem o reconhecimento dos consumidores a certificação não é viável porque não tem efeito sobre quem compra e os produtores não vêem vantagens em a adoptarem. Uma outra opção que começa a acontecer é os próprios supermercados adoptarem campanhas de sustentabilidade com a colaboração de outras entidades. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in the world's best-selling weedkiller Roundup, causes malformations in frog and chicken embryos at doses far lower than those used in agricultural spraying and well below maximum residue levels in products presently approved in the European Union. This is reported in research (1) published by a group around Professor Andrés Carrasco, director of the Laboratory of Molecular Embryology at the University of Buenos Aires Medical School and member of Argentina's National Council of Scientific and Technical Research. Carrasco was led to research the embryonic effects of glyphosate by reports of high rates of birth defects in rural areas of Argentina where Monsanto's genetically modified "Roundup Ready" (RR) soybeans are grown in large monocultures sprayed from airplanes regularly.
