Vai um bife de baleia?...

Lofoten para além de bacalhau tem também baleia.

Não é um peixe, é um mamífero.

Mas é um recurso marinho.

E selvagem.

A espécie é a baleia anã.

Only Minke whaling is currently permitted, from a population of 107,000 animals in the North East Atlantic and is argued by proponents and government officials to be sustainable.

Still, it has been frequently criticized by the international community, environmentalists and animal rights groups as Norway, along with Iceland and Japan, is one of few countries that still allows whaling.

Foi difícil de perceber que há carne de baleia por todo o lado:

no supermercado, nos restaurantes e no mercado de rua como produto regional.

Nos restaurantes é mais barato baleia do que peixe!

O governo Norueguês argumenta que é um recurso com uma gestão sustentável e que a actividade é importante para as comunidades locais:

The whale meat is used for consumption, primarily on the domestic market. Minke whaling today is a small scale costal activity and is carried out by vessels of between 40 and 80 feet in length with a crew of four to eight people. 
The home harbours of most whaling vessels are small fishing communities, and whaling in combination with fishing has contributed significantly to the economic and social development or rural, coastal communities in Norway.
Norwegian whaling is based on the principle of protection and sustainable harvesting of marine resources. Management of resources is founded on scientific advice, with the objective based on the concept of an ecosystem approach. Quotas are set on the basis of procedures developed by the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC). This committee has estimated that the stocks of minke whale that we harvest in the Northeast Atlantic and around Jan Mayen total 108 thousand animals. For 2011, a quota was set of 1286 animals, being composed of a basic annual quota of 885 and the addition of unused quotas from previous years.

É como carne de alce ou veado, que continua a ser permitido caçar na Suécia.

Surgem-me as questões éticas:

- é diferente caçar uma baleia ou um alce?

- se a morte do animal for considerada com o menor sofrimento possível, 

faz sentido comer mamíferos em vez de peixe?

- o sofrimento da morte de um peixe na pesca, por exaustão e falta de ar, 

é menor do que de um mamífero na caça, com um tiro e morte imediata?    

- 1 baleia dá toneladas de carne, qual a proporção em galinhas de aviário?

- para além do bem estar animal, qual o custo ambiental dessa proporção?

...o bife, 

é mal ou bem passado?
