I'm amazed how the speech in the first person can make the message so much easier to understand and to encourage other people to do the same. When I talk about my work during the PhD, we often end up talking about recipes. It seems silly to go from a scientific thesis, with so much data and reading put on, to such an ordinarily everydays life issue :) Buy, cook and eat...or decide and plan before each step. I think about this issue also because I usually tend to personalize the examples that I give, which can only be seen as my point of view, of course, and my generalizing conception of reality. But the point is: it makes the theory turn to real. Bea Johnson has this approach as "do it sustainable by yourself" in her life mode. Being part of an experiment about changing consumption habits is better than any graphic or numbers that one can use. She can explains everything very clear and with passion and it is an easier way to spread the message because it is shown...

But it's not yet my migration season. Soon it will come. I just need to find my way and follow the sun light, the stars and the coastline.

Uma vez a M.A. disse-me, enquanto avaliava o meu trabalho de primeiro ano como estudante de doutoramento, que devia acrescentar como um dos resultados o meu blog. A " coisa verde " é um projecto que passa a mensagem de 7 coisas que podemos fazer para sermos mais verdes. Há 7 milhares de outras coisas, mas estas são simples e atingíveis, e podem ser adoptadas por qualquer pessoa que nunca tenha pensado no assunto. Os vídeos são muito bons: gostei do Human Heat e da comparação com os pinguins que se juntam para vencer o frio com o calor "humano" e do Plug Out com a animação em papel. O vídeo é cada vez mais um meio importante de comunicar. É simples, fácil de difundir e atractivo. O projecto português Stand by é um exemplo do que se pode fazer com uma ideia e poucos recursos. Encontrei aqui este vídeo aqui que explica rápido e bem o que se passa actualmente no jornalismo de ciência. Acontece aqui como nos outros países, é um problema relacionado com a comunicação em geral. A história começa assim: 1. há cada vez mais acesso a diferentes tipos e meios de informação, 2. há por isso menos recursos, 3. assim deixa-se cair a especialização a aposta-se na generalização, 4. os jornalista não têm tempo para investigar e aprofundar os assuntos, 5. há poucas notícias boas sobre ciência... ... and in the end sabemos menos sobre o que os cientistas fazem, por isso temos menor capacidade de ter opinião sobre o que os cientistas andam a fazer, sobre o que os políticos decidem e sobre o que é decidido em função dos lobbys científicos. E que no final, ao não termos opinião, não exigimos como cidadãos, e as consequências revelam-se depois no funcionamento da nossa sociedade! THE END
