tomorrow will be a better day...this is more or less what Tomorrow movie tells us. I enjoyed the positive approach of the movie that is about sustainable way of living but also the overall perspective about how to change habits and political models which our society is based in. I thought it was very interesting to learn with the movie Where Does Money Come From? because it is amazingly simple and terrifying at the same time. Money is created by banks, private companies: Physical cash accounts for less than 3 per cent of the total stock of money in the economy. Commercial bank money – credit and coexistent deposits – makes up the remaining 97 per cent of the money supply. There are several conflicting ways of describing what banks do. The simplest version is that banks take in money from savers, and lend this money out to borrowers. This is not at all how the process works. Banks do not need to wait for a customer to deposit money before t...
If you eat meat, you should not have shower

The water to produce 110 grams of meat is equivalent to 26 showers. This campaign wants to show that by skipping showers for every hamburger you eat, you can offset the water used to produce it. Everything has a trade-off and it is difficult to weight things all the time we need to make decisions. Moreover is difficult to quantify the environmental costs, which can be very different depending on the context. I try to keep having shower and eating less meat. But what I would like to skip is flying (even though it is not the same comparison because it is about reducing greenhouse gas emissions). But this year I already flew one time to South America, for vacation, and two times in Europe, for work reasons. I cannot eat more meat until the end of this year or maybe no more showers!
No sardine, no fun

Has in Portugal, moreover in the Atlantic, the sardine is an important fish in the Pacific. But not only for people. It is an important food for other marine animals, as birds and mammals. There is not enough information why, but the sardine stock seems to be declining in the California coast. As it happens to other top predators as tuna, that have been intensively harvested, the sardine fishery can also have irremediable consequences for the marine ecosystem. Sardine is in a low level of the marine trophic web but they have an important role for other predators. If we fish too much, there is less sardine to feed other animals and it is more difficult to recover. If we look back, we can learn from the past. Without fish, there is no fishery, no food...and in the end no sea life. The decline has prompted steep cuts in the amount fishermen are allowed to catch, and scientists say the effects are probably radiating throughout the ecosystem, starving brown pelicans, sea lions and...
Livestock is the globe's primary contributor of human-caused greenhouse gas

As the IPCC rolls out its climate appraisal, the overall impact of industrial animal farming bears thinking about. The FAO's last livestock report, a 2006 assessment titled Livestock's Long Shadow, found that farms breeding chickens, pigs, and cows for meat and dairy products, produced a disconcerting 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Despite being called into question, that figure strengthened the case for vegetarianism: it was shown to be higher than the greenhouse gas discharge from cars and planes combined. The latest FAO study lowers that number to 14.5%. and... ...when it comes to livestock, reducing emissions isn't the only challenge. "Around 30% of global biodiversity loss can be attributed to livestock production, such as the spread of pasture land or turning over forests and savannahs…to feed production." There's also the role that consumers play in driving unsustainable industries—a feature that was beyond the scope of its current repor...

Climate and agriculture are inextricably linked: the climate affects agricultural production and is itself affected by agr...
Crescer ou não crescer, eis a questão

Eis a resposta... O movimento do d...
Nitrogen footprint

Although nitrogen occurs naturally and is essential for life, human activities are releasing excessive, polluting amounts into the environment. The largest sources of nitrogen pollution come from food production and the burning of fossil fuels. For example, artificial nitrogen fertilisers are used to improve food yields, but overuse of fertilisers results in surplus nitrogen that contaminates the environment. Nitrogen pollution affects the health of people and ecosystems. It disrupts the natural nitrogen cycle, damages air and water quality and contributes to the formation of smog, acid rain, ozone depletion in the upper atmosphere and eutrophication of coastal waters. One form of nitrogen, nitrous oxide, is a potent greenhouse gas. The N-Calculator can help people make changes to their lifestyle to reduce their nitrogen footprint. The biggest changes are related to diet. For example, eating less red me...

"Fighting the most devastating myths by building a fact-based world view that everyone understands." Gapminder is a non-profit venture – a modern “museum” on the Internet – promoting sustainable global development and achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Gapminder was founded in Stockholm by Ola Rosling, Anna Rosling Rönnlund and Hans Rosling on February 25, 2005. It is an operating foundation that provides sevices as defined by the board, sometimes as collaborative projects with universities, UN organisations, public agencies and non-governmental organisations.
Does Helping the Planet Hurt the Poor?

No, if the West makes sacrifices. Giving equal weight to the interests of future generations provides us with strong reasons to be concerned about environmental preservation, as well as about the more immediate concern of reducing global poverty. We should help today's global poor, but not at the expense of tomorrow's global poor. To preserve the options available to future generations, we should aim at development that does no further damage to wilderness or to endangered species. ... All the ethical arguments point to the industrialized Western nations taking the lead. On the familiar rule that "if you broke it, you fix it," there is no doubt that these nations bear historical responsibility for most of the greenhouse gases now in the atmosphere. Several Chinese think tanks recently produced a report titled "Carbon Equity." They calculated that from 1850 to 2004, the average American put 21 times as much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as the average Ch...

O relatório Eating the planet faz um resumo da situação e apresenta alguns números que podem ser indicadores: Meat and dairy production – now responsible for a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions – is predicted to double by 2050. This is incompatible with the need to cut emissions by at least 80 % in the same period to prevent the worst effects of climate change. Mas agora a ONG Friends of the earth publicou um outro relatório Healthy Planet Eating . Depois dos argumentos ambientais, agora são apresentados dados de que mostram as vantagens para a saúde humana da dimunuição do consumo de carne: Eating meat no more than 3 times a week could save thousands of lives and £1.2bn in NHS costs each year. Eating less meat would mean in the UK each year: 31,000 few...

The story of cap and trade

Tu...
